Attention to detail is evident everywhere in this project. The house, designed by local architects, G2 Architects, and built by local builder, EJ&PG Horspool, won ‘Best Custom Build’ and ‘House of the Year’ in the 2017 HIA Awards for our region.

The quality and detail of the landscaping reflects the standard of the residence.

Our scope of work included detailed design of all external areas of the property, selection of materials, liaison with builder and landscape contractor, sourcing and supply of all plant material and plant set out.

Located in an elevated position close to the ocean, this garden presented a great opportunity for a contemporary coastal garden to complement the architecture of the house.

The organic forms of the Bluestone stepping stones and gravel path contrast with the clean contemporary style of residence. Rectangular Bluestone pavers were chosen for the formal entry path and the stepping stones in the Onzen area. Here the stepping stones sit in meticulously placed pebbles creating a beautifully textured base to the bath overlooking the ocean.

Salt resistant Corten steel was used throughout the garden for screens, edging, sculpture and the fire pit.

The proximity to the ocean limits choice in the planting scheme but at the same time is always a great opportunity to use some commonly used coastal plants in a fresh manner together with more unusual plants such as Kalanchoe Silver Spoons and Agave geminiflora. Trees that grow well in this exposed location are Banksia integrifolia and Tuckeroos.
