To achieve the perfect pot and plant combination, more than just looks have to be considered.
• Size – to create impact in an outdoor situation always go for large, sometimes oversized pots. Small pots just add to a cluttered look. Consider grouping two or three sizes of the same pot together or add a sculptural element with a particularly beautifully shaped pot. Also consider how much root space a particular plant needs to stay looking good. The answer is usually ‘more than you think’.
• Location and aspect – sun or shade, exposed and windy, frontline coastal? Evaluating conditions is a critical factor when selecting pots and plants. How quickly will the pots dry out? How much heat will be at the root zone of the plant? That metal pot might just fry the roots whereas a thicker walled pot will retain the moisture.
• Shape and form – this depends somewhat on what you would like to achieve. One large pot can be a singular feature whereas a group of pots can provide a much needed visual connection and link from the patio to the rest of the garden. How high should the plants be? Are they to provide screening or be a stand out feature in front of a coloured wall?
• Maintenance – Can your chosen plant handle a few days without watering? Does it still thrive after a week or two without water? Does it need regular pruning?
