This fruit-bearing tree is a native to Brazil, and will thrive in a subtropical climate. The tree is a slow-growing evergreen reaching 3-8m in height.
It has salmon coloured leaves when young which turn green as they mature.
Jaboticabas prefer fertile, moist, free draining soil. It is widely adaptable and grows satisfactorily in less favourable conditions.
The tree is grown for its purplish-black, white-pulped fruits; they can be eaten raw, juiced or often made into jam. Its flowers are white and grow directly from its trunk in a cauliflorous habit, making it a truly unusual and striking sight.
The fruit is grape-like, thick-skinned berry. It has a thick, purple, astringent skin that encases a sweet, white or rosy pink gelatinous flesh.
Jaboticabas are very slow growing initially, grafted plants may not bear fruit until they are at least 5 years old, however, they do make a very ornamental tree.
An unusual fruit producing plant, perfect for those with patience, vision, and a taste for the unusual; well worth the wait we think.
