THE LINK
The Link gardens have been designed to provide the community with an inclusive and intergenerational space where people can connect with nature and each other and to support their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. This project has won the Australian Institute of Horticulture’s coveted National Green Space Regional Award.
The Link is a physical expression of Sawtell Catholic Care’s mission in action. Located on the site of a former nursery, the footprint of the existing sheds and sales offices was retained and replaced with new functional bungalows and pavilion buildings. These sit comfortably within the landscaped environment and will host a wide range of community programs
The Café overlooks the centerpiece of the gardens; the expansive lagoon which provides the site with a sustainable fresh water supply and acts as a storm water quality improvement device.
Formal and informal pathways made out of concrete finishes, timber boardwalks and natural surfaces, lead to destinations such as the multi-level natural amphitheatre, several meditation and lagoon viewing platforms, and the central shady tropical feature garden.
The extensive Community Garden features 20 large, raised vegetable garden beds. A purpose-built potting shed provides Sawtell Catholic Care residents, school children and members of the community with a safe and accessible space for intergenerational gardening activities. There is also an extensive playground to further encourage visits by the younger generations
landscaping elements, including the lagoon and rock-lined water courses, provide visitors with physical activities and a sensory experience that evoke emotions and imagination.
The Link gardens have been designed to provide seniors and those at risk with a safe, accessible recreational, remedial and social facility that promotes inclusion and an active and healthy lifestyle.
