With the images still fresh in my mind from my visit to both Stonefields and Musk Farm, I wanted to share a little about both of these incredibly beautiful homes and gardens with you. Although we live in a completely different climate, good garden design is inspirational no matter the location.
Victoria showed its true character with both rain and freezing weather, which did not deter the garden enthusiasts, who came in their thousands to see these remarkable gardens situated only an hour north of Melbourne.
STONEFIELDS –Paul Bangay’s garden lived up to expectations after having read his recently released book ‘ The Garden at Stonefields’. What was a bare paddock only eight years ago, has been masterfully transformed. The modern Italianate residence and contemporary formal garden, both designed and built by Paul Bangay, can only be described as a work of art.
I was most impressed with Bangay’s ability to manipulate levels perfectly to maximise the stunning views across the valley and to make the transition from one section of the garden to another flow effortlessly. Progressing through enclosed garden rooms, makes the opening up to the views even more dramatic. The gardens also emphasised again how important backdrop and visual boundaries are to a garden.
MUSK FARM –Commencing life as a school and falling into disrepair, Musk Farm was purchased in 1998 by Stuart Rattle, one of Australia’s leading Interior designers. The garden’s concept is based on the romantic ethos of early 19thcentury English gardens. The garden is divided into a series of rooms separated by tall hedges, each with it’s own character. Perfectly clipped Box balls, lichen covered statuary and of course the magnificent cold climate plants, such as flowering Rhododendrons, make being in this garden feel like a trip to England.
The home and garden harmonise perfectly, both appearing to have evolved together over a long period of time.
